THE CHAIR
Professor Zhang Rong, born in Jiangsu Province of China,took the presidency of Xiamen University in July, 2017. He is a professor in Physics.
Shortly after graduating from Nanjing University (NJU) in 1985 with a degree in Physics, he started to teach at NJU and was appointed a full professorship in 1995. In the same year, he earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University. He was a visiting scholar to the University of Maryland and University of Wisconsin. In 2000, he was selected as a“Changjiang Distinguished Professor”and won the National Outstanding Youth Foundation Award.
Prior to his position at Xiamen University, he served as Associate Vice President, Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee, Vice President, and Executive Vice President of NJU from November 2006 to October 2013, and acted as President as Shandong University from October 2013 to July 2017.
Prof. Zhang's research focus has been on semiconductor materials and devices. He has led many research projects funded by the State Major Program for Basic Researches (the 973 Program), the High-Tech Development Program (the 863 Program) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), achieving significant results in wide band-gap semiconductor heterostructures and devices, semiconductor optoelectronic devices and spintronics.
